September 28th 2005

The S&C agent in Qatar informs S&C about the general trends of the Al Waab Str project, including:

  • General info about the project. Context.
  • Dimensions of the avenue
  • Lighting requirements
  • Ashghal aesthetic preferences for S&C products (hierarchically, at that moment):
    1. Lampelunas
    2. Sara
    3. Latina
    4. Rama
  • Narrow circumstances about the designing of the Avenue
  • Conceptual criteria: to resemble the waves at the sea


October 2nd 2005

Presentation of PROJECT 1 to Ashghal, made with Latina streetlights with their arm in three different inclinations, placed in the middle of the avenue in perpendicular position to the main road.

Presentation of PROJECT 2 to Ashghal, made with Latina streetlights with their arm in standard inclination, placed in the middle of the avenue in 45º to the former perpendicular position to the main road, in the same sense as the traffic flow (not glaring)

The agent of S&C in Qatar convinces S&C to study and produce the PROJECT 3, made solely with Lampelunas


November 20th 2005

Presentation of PROJECT 3 to Ashghal, made with Lampelunas streetlights, that produces worst lighting results than the prior PROJECT 1 and (specially) PROJECT 2.The PROJECT 3 was formed by:

  • Standard Lampelunas with 6 optical spots to be placed on the dividing central area of the avenue
  • Special Lampelunas with 7 optical spots (at 12 m. high) to be placed on both lateral sides of the avenue

S&C delivers at this time:

  • Full memorandum of the lighting concept
  • Detail drawings of the proposal (urban maps)
  • Technical lighting curves of the proposal
  • 3D images and renders
  • Video simulating the final effect
  • Technical info and photos of the standard products involved (Lampelunas and Latina)


January 4th 2006

All three PROJECTS done so far by S&C were presented personally by Mr Georges Khadra to the General Manager of Ashghal, H.E, Eng. Zayed Mansoor Al-Khayareen. During the conversation S&C is asked to develop a fourth solution mixing both Lampelunas and Latinas streetlights.

January 12th 2006

The S&C agent for Qatar comes to Barcelona (Spain) to transmit all hard and soft information about Al Waab Str project, and discuss the way to proceed further.


January 25th 2006

S&C sends to Doha the PROJECT 4 made with the following composition:

  • Standard Lampelunas with 6 optical spots to be placed on the dividing central area of the avenue.
  • Standard Latina streetlights with 5 optical spots (up to 14 m. high) to be placed on both lateral sides of the avenue.
  • Standard Lentis streetlight for the pedestrian corridors of the avenue.

S&C delivers at this time:

  • Full memorandum of the lighting concept.
  • Detail drawings of the proposal (urban maps).
  • Technical lighting curves of the proposal.
  • 3D images and renders.
  • Video simulating the final effect.
  • Technical info and photos of the standard products involved (Lampelunas, Latina, and Lentis).


January 30th 2006

The S&C agent for Qatar presents personally the PROJECTS 1, 2, 3 and 4 to Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, third son of H.R.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. It is clearly stated some objections against the Lampelunas streetlight (mainly by H.E. Zayed Mansoor Al-Khayareen).


January 30th 2006

Email sent by the S&C agent to Barcelona. "Congratulations". H.E. Crown Prince Jassim has personally chosen the Latina streetlight as the one preferred for Al Waab Street.


February 1st 2006

S&C asks Beth Gali and her studio to develop the variations asked from Doha.


February 9th 2006

S&C sends to Doha the PROJECT 5 made with the collaboration of Beth Gali studio:

  • Special Latina streetlights with 5 optical spots (up to 14 m. high) to be placed on both lateral sides of the avenue, but with an additional rear arm (1 spot) to light the lateral service lanes on both directions.

S&C delivers at this time:

  • Full memorandum of the lighting concept.
  • Detail drawings of the proposal (urban maps).
  • Technical lighting curves of the proposal.
  • 3D images and renders.
  • Technical info and photos of the special product involved (Latina with rear arm).


February 13th 2006

Phone conversation notifying the acceptance from Ashghal of the final PROJECT 5 and asking for quotation.

S&C is asked to quotate beacons of the standard model Area but with the logo of the XV Asian Games Doha 2006.

All information and photos concerning the Area beacons are sent to Doha.


March 6th 2006

Email sent by S&C to LI urging to talk with BO because the terms for production of PROJECT 5 is going too short.


March 7th 2006

Email sent by S&C to LI with all the required public certifications (Applus+) concerning about resistance to wind, sand, sea corrosion and trust, security, etc. of the special Latina designed for the PROJECT 5.


March 8th 2006

Fax from Ashghal to Bin Omran asking for 13 additional needs of specific information.

Email sent by S&C to LI with photos of the physical models and digital renders of the special Latina with rear arm, and all the additional required information.


April 2nd 2006

Visit of the Export Manager of S&C to Doha.

Delivery of the physical model of the special Latina, and every complementary technical and structural information, to the Road Maintenance Dept. of Ashghal.

Visit of the Export Manager of S&C to Mr Abdul Hameed Ali Akbar Radwani, responsible for Urban Projects at Ashghal. Conversation about S&C urban benches to be placed at Al Waab Street and The Corniche (seafront of Doha).

The S&C Export Manager cannot have his interview with H.R.H. Jassim Bin Hamad Khalifa Al Thani, as supposedly scheduled, because the Crown Prince is precisely on trip to Barcelona.

The S&C agent in Doha calls S&C to comment the rumour that Ashghal has asked to Al Shulah Lighting (Doha), a company connected to Lux Lighting (UK), to quotate the PROJECT 5 of S&C. First notice of a possible case of counterfeiting.


April 18th 2006

S&C Legal Dept send a "Cease and Desist" certified email and physical letter to Mr Gassan Kannous (General Manager of Al Shulah Lighting) and Mr Ahmed Ali Mirza (Road Maintenance Manager of Ashghal).

A copy of the "Cease and Desist" email and letter is also sent to Lightbox and Bin Omran.


April 25th 2006

Meeting at the Light & Building Fair (Frankfurt). There are no clear statements or reactions answering the S&C “Cease and Desist” letter to Al Shulah and Ashghal. It is agreed a second visit of the S&C Export Manager to Doha to understand the situation.


May 5th 2006

Second visit of the S&C Export Manager to Doha. No official answer to the “Cease and Desist” letter. It was scheduled, and 2 times hourly postponed, an interview with Mr Ahmed Ali Mirza (Road Maintenance Manager of Ashghal). Finally, Mr Mirza do not attend the interview, excuses his overload and do not accept even a phone conversation with the S&C Export Manager.


May 15th 2006

Long email from the S&C agent in Qatar to the S&C Export Manager to explain a final conversation between him and Mr Ahmed Ali Mirza (Road Maintenance Manager of Ashghal). (This email is reproduced as Annex 1.2).

S&C frankly believes that the Project has been lost, for whatever the reasons, and that Al Shulah is developing its own supposedly better project for Al Waab Str.
